Task 1- Report the Purpose, Styles, Conventions, and Techniques of a Music Video
24/09/2014- Video 2
Quick Brief of the singer:
Phil Collins was born on January 30th 1951, he is a British songwriter, singer, drummer and actor. When he was a child, he played the role of "The Artful Dodger" in the London Production "Oliver!" In 1970 he was the replacement drummer in the band Genesis, After the lead singer left the band in 1974, the band tried to find a new singer after 400 unsuccessful auditions they let Phil Collins sing. After much success as the lead singer in Genesis, Phil Collins choose to go solo and in 1981 he released his debut album "Face Value." This album was a bigger hit than any previous Genesis album. He carried on his success with solo singing and Genesis and was big throughout the 80s and 90s. In 1999 Disney hired Phil Collins to sing the songs for the 1999 movie "Tarzan." And they used him again for the 2003 movie "Brother Bear." {1}
Purpose:
Promotional:This song and music video was not used to promote a new album, but was used to promote the 2003 Disney film "Brother Bear." you can tell this because throughout the music video you will see clips from "Brother Bear." You can see the examples in the synergy.
You could say he used Disney to promote his music to the younger generation, he sang all the songs from "Tarzan", this might make the younger generation like the sound of Phil Collins and want to listen to more of his music.
Synergy:
Throughout this music video you can clearly see this song is linked to "Brother Bear." The first time you see the link is at [0:15]:
This will go on throughout the video. Here is showing you they will use it throughout the song, in the middle at [1:42] and at the end [3:27]:
After [3:27] you will no longer see any clips from the movie, and will finish off with Phil Collins and a choir.Producers Strategies:
Walt Disney Records which is a major record label was the label that produced "No Way Out." Disney are probably the biggest and most well known company in the media industry, and their music industry is no different. Walt Disney Records founded in 1956 under a different name of "Disneyland Records." They renamed it to "Walt Disney Records" in 1989. They mainly specialise in Disneys motion pictures and their theme park. Sometimes they will produce studio albums from teen pop artists. For example, they released albums for Selena Gomez, Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato, etc. {2}
Styles
Phil Collins "No Way Out" will use the narrative style, he tells the story by using the Disney digital animation "Brother Bear." If you have not seen the film "Brother Bear" then the story of the music video won't make too much sense and just sounds like a love song.
For example at [1:51-1;57] Phil Collins sings "And I can face another day," and then you will get a clip from "Brother Bear" where you see the bigger bear Kenai looking for Koda to help him return to his human form after being turned into a bear:
Conventions:
"No Way Out" uses allusions to allow the viewers to understand the lyrics. The music video will use scenes from "Brother Bear" to imply the story and the lyrics. So if you have not seen "Brother Bear" you might think its something different.
For example at [1:06-1:11] Phil Collins sing "Everyone I love, their all gone." And after you see the clip from "Brother Bear" with Koda running away from Kenai and then Kenai looking back realising is is alone, this is because Kenai upset Koda, and Koda was the only one left that cared for Kenai. To the people that has seen "Brother Bear" this is Lyric Interpretation, because you know that scene and what happens. But for people that has never seen "Brother Bear" this clip is implying thats what happens:
Another example is at the end of the song when it starts to get happier, you know see scenes with Koda and Kenai working together. They worked together to stop the evil person trying to hunt them. Then Phil Collins sings at [3;02-3:28]"I see my future, and your forgiveness is setting me free, and I can see another way, I can face another day." And during all that you can see the spirits forgiving Kenai for what he did in the beginning of the film and returned him into human form. At [3:08[ you can see that the spirits are around:
Then at [3;21] you can see the spirits with Kenai:
And finally at [3:26] you see the spirits have returned Kenai back to human form:
But the only way you would know that Kenai needed forgiveness from the beginning is if you have see the film.
If you listen to the song before watching the music video, the lyrics sound like a generic love song.
Techniques
This song rarely cuts towards the beat during the verse's of the song, but and random parts of the choruses it will. At [0:27] when the song has jumped into the chorus it cuts towards the beat. And then when the chorus ends at [1:00].
The song uses Disney's animated film for there special effects, this has been shown throughout this post. Here are the times you see it in this music video. [0:14-0:20], [0:32-0:33], [0:47-0:49], [0:55-0;58], [1:08-1:11], [1:23-1:25], [1:28-1:30], [1:41-1:45], [1:51-1:58], [2:03-2:05], [2:21-2:24], [2:27-2:28], [2:29-2:31], [2:34-2:38], [2:44-2:47], [3:06-3:09], [3:19-3:21], and [3:26-3:27].
Also throughout the song they will use a green screen, this will show two different things, one will show you a different scene with Phil Collins and another will have a background.
At [0:32] you can see Phil Collins sitting on a bed and the back wall is a background of a forest:
And at [0:42] you can see the background behind Phil Collins:
And here at [0:52] of them using that green screen to display two images of Phil Collins and the room:
I feel they are using miming and lip syncing for this video, because throughout the video you can see his lips moving at all times. But it sounds to clear to be singing live.
Zoom Movements:
There is a slight zoom movement at [0:44-0:45] where the camera is zooming closer to Phil Collins:
The camera movement they use the most is the panning movement, I am going to give you an example from the beginning, middle and the end.
At [0:42-0:43] you can see the camera panning to the right:
There is a tilt camera movement, but it is shown using the "Brother Bear" footage, while the filming camera is still stationary this occurs at [1:41-1:42]:
Camera Angles:
They have used three different camera angles during the music video. These are High Angle shots, Low Angle shots and Eye Level shots.
High Angle Shot:
I have noticed this angle once during this music video, and they only used this angle in the "Brother Bear" shot quite early on. You see this at [0:16]. But the camera you are seeing it at is at a low angle:
Low Angle shot:
You see this angle throughout the video, you see it filming Phil Collins and you see it filming the TV screen.
You can see it at [0:37] you see it quite low to the ground:
Again at [1:25]:
You see another one at [2:25]:
And again at [3:34]:
Eye Level:
The majority of the video is shown at eye level. They use this angle while filming Phil Collins and the choir.
Some Examples:
At [0:08]:
At [1:27]:
At [1:46]:
At [2:10]:
At [2:41]:
And another one at [3;30]:
This video has been edited at a reasonable pace. It is quite easy to follow, there is usually a gap of 3-5 seconds between cuts.
